How to: Alberta Spring Elopement

Considering going against the grain of a summer wedding? Choosing an Alberta spring elopement is great for couple’s looking for a unique day, all to themselves. There are some important things to consider though, like the weather, vendor availability, and location accessibility.

What about the weather

Spring weather is a bit unpredictable. A week of sunny skies can be followed by a snowstorm and no one would really be surprised. If you don’t mind not knowing what to expect on the day of your elopement, or want the winter vibes without the winter chill and deep freeze this might be perfect for you! For example, you’re likely to find temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius at Banff all spring long.

Don’t let the threat of rainy skies or cold air sway you from planning an elopement in the spring. The cooler temperatures mean a lower chance of someone overheating, a disaster not uncommon during a summer wedding, and allow for a wedding day full of activity that keeps you moving and having fun.

Can you hike for an Alberta spring elopement?

The answer to this is a big huge heck yes. Honestly the weather, as unpredictable as it may be, is really great for hiking elopements in the spring! Whether you want to wear your wedding wardrobe up the trail or put it on once you’re in your ceremony spot, you’ll have extra gear keeping you warm. The cooler spring temps can make wearing those extra layers, or pounds in your pack a lot more comfortable!

The downside however, is that hiking locations might be a bit limited. Some roads might still be closed for the season, and lakes are often still frozen. If an Alberta spring elopement is important to you, it’s best to be flexible on location if you are hoping for a hiking or adventure elopement. Let me know if you need location ideas! I have lots of great spots that would be utterly breathtaking in the spring for you to say your vows.

Longer days mean more time for fun!

The early sunrises and late sunsets in the spring mean that you can get married in the morning and have the whole day to celebrate! When golden hour starts at 6 am, you can say your vows under a pink and orange sky, and hike back down a mountain in time for brunch at your favorite spot, followed by a leisurely bike ride and dinner with a few loved ones. The long spring days mean more time to make your elopement everything you want it to be.

Get the vendors you want!

Because spring is not the peak wedding season, you’re more likely to book the vendors you really want! Summer is when things get crazy for those in the wedding and elopement industry. By planning for a spring elopement, you give yourself more opportunity to have the pros you really want in attendance. This also makes spring a great option for those wanting a shorter engagement. A three month planning period is a lot easier to manage with an elopement date in May, than with one in July or August.

Celebrate the blossoming nature

If you are a couple who love metaphor, a spring elopement date is steeped in it. It’s hard to imagine something more magical than entering into the union of marriage, starting a new stage of life among the new life of spring. From green shoots making their first appearance above hard ground, to delicate blossoms on the tips of tree branches, spring is full of exciting and beautiful change, just like a new marriage.

Where to go?

Need that perfect spring location? Drumheller is a great location for couples looking for a desert vibe that want a smaller chance of late snow. If you’re planning to bring a few guests along, a mountain lodge might be a great choice. They can also clear any snow from your ceremony area if you’d like! A spot like the Fairmont Chateau could be perfect for you.

Whatever your reason for choosing an Alberta spring elopement, there are so many ways to make it wonderful. Spring elopements are so unique and filled with fun, they’re a blast to capture! "Liv is extremely talented and great to work with! She gave us enough direction in our shoots to know what to do but still left tons of room for candid, genuine moments. Nothing beats seeing real smiles and laughter in your photos! She was more than willing to collaborate and go for some sillier ideas, and was always super encouraging. She's an incredibly sweet person and we felt very comfortable to be ourselves around her. Liv's talent is beyond just the technical knowledge, she really has an artist eye for beautiful photos. Her editing style is perfect, not too dark or light but still brings personality with the warm tones she adds. I HIGHLY recommend working with Liv!!"
